ISLG Launches the Kriegel Fellowship for Public Service Leaders

This fall, the CUNY Institute for State and Local Governance (ISLG) is launching a unique professional development fellowship program specifically designed for chiefs of staff of New York City and New York State legislators. The Kriegel Fellowship for Public Service Leaders is a one-of-a-kind program that will support and empower legislative chiefs of staff to excel in their current positions, network with other chiefs of staff and government and management experts, and grow confidently into the next generation of elected officials and public service leaders.

ISLG leadership and staff have decades of on-the-ground public service experience and have led the Lindsay Fellowship in Government Leadership and Practice—for New York City and State elected officials—since 2017. Named for Jay L. Kriegel, the Kriegel Fellowship for Public Service Leaders program was developed based on research and interviews with numerous NYC and NYS legislators and chiefs of staff to understand the demands and responsibilities of the chief of staff position and corresponding needs for professional and leadership development, learning community, and other support. With this input, ISLG specifically designed this fellowship to support and match the needs of chiefs of staff serving city and state lawmakers.

Kriegel Fellows will meet as a peer community on ten evenings from late September to December 2020 for virtual, interactive sessions focused on three core areas of skill-building: leadership and management; partnerships and community organizing; and key policy and governing areas of greatest importance to the Fellowship cohort.
